Your Japan guide - Maddie Crowell

Maddie Crowell

Maddie, a 27 year-old Colorado native, was born and bred in the mountains of Telluride. When her parents strapped a pair of skis on her feet at the young age of 2 and there was no looking back. She raced competitively in high school, but switched her focus to big mountain competitions and backcountry skiing when she moved to British Columbia to attend university. She spends the summers working as a mountain guide on Mt. Shasta in northern California and works part time as a cat skiing guide in the winter. Maddie's skiing passion has taken her to Europe, Japan, Canada and all over the western US. Last year she completed her Canadian Avalanche Association Operational Avalanche course and is currently a member of the Salomon Ambassador Team.

What People Are Saying…

Oh, JaPOW! This was one EPIC trip to the other side of the world!

Maddie & Natalie were the best hostess' providing laughs, food, music, namaste, powder, and insight into Japan. They helped us from the moment we stepped off the plane in Tokyo to navigating our way to Tsugaike Kogen and back again. The house was beautiful and perfect for accommodating such a large group of ladies. We got lucky while there and received over six feet, yes, FEET of the best snow I've ever had the pleasure of shredding. Mind I live in a ski town. The ladies were amazing at showing us around the ski area and taking us through the town at night to get some grub. I would highly recommend any of the SnowLocal trips and this ladies package was TOP NOTCH!

Snowlocals ski and yoga retreat in Hakuba
eat local ramen after skiing with the ski and yoga retreat 2019

The Snow Locals Ski + Yoga retreat was the perfect way to experience Japan's phenomenal terrain, unique culture and delicious, odd cuisine for the first time, all while connecting and recharging with like-minded ladies in a beautiful ski-in-ski-out chalet. Trust me: Skiing Japan is even better than you've imagined. We were incredibly fortunate that the conditions delivered the powder we had all fantasized about--nearly six feet over a five day period. I couldn't recommend the retreat or the leaders, Maddie and Natalie, more highly. They, with the help of Snow Locals, took care of the challenging travel logistics, showed us to the best powder stashes, led us in mindfulness and yoga practices, provided lots of smiles and laughs, and sought out the best ramen that small town Hakuba has to offer. Flora is also a shining light with whom I really enjoyed talking about nutrition and holistic health practices. This trip is especially great for solo women travelers like myself, looking for the right opportunity to ski Japan and make some new friends along the way, while leaving room for freedom and independence. You will come away with an incredibly memorable and meaningful experience.
