Choosing the Right Travel Insurance for Ski Trips to Japan

Disclosure: These are a few providers I am affiliated with. We receive a fee when you get a quote from these providers using these links. This is not a recommendation to buy travel insurance. Be sure to choose the policy that best fits your travel plans, and always read the policy carefully to understand what’s covered (and what isn’t).

Here’s a snapshot of how some common providers compare for ski-focused trips to Japan:

Global Rescue
Not traditional insurance—more of a global safety net. Membership covers field rescue and medical evacuation with no out-of-pocket cost if you need help on the mountain or beyond. Coverage is primary, worldwide, and not limited to Japan. You can add a standard travel insurance plan for trip cancellations, delays, or even a “cancel for any reason” option.

Why I like it: Global Rescue is broader than a single ski trip policy—it protects you on future travels too, and in all sorts of unforeseen circumstances. It’s perhaps most appropriate for backcountry skiers in Japan, or in another global curveball like the next pandemic. If you are a frequent traveler/adventurer then Global Rescue coverage will follow you wherever you go.

World Nomads
Popular with adventure travelers. Offers policies that specifically cover skiing and snowboarding, but coverage is secondary—you’ll pay first and claim reimbursement. Not available for travelers over 70, and mainly for U.S. residents.

Travelex
A straightforward option for travelers from the U.S. and Canada. Covers trip costs, delays, and medical issues while abroad.

Travel Guard (U.S. travelers only)
Standard travel insurance with an optional “cancel for any reason” upgrade. One useful add-on is the Adventure Sports Bundle (usually not much extra), which removes exclusions for certain adventure and extreme activities.
